Unit 1 · Introduction to Social Pharmacy and Public Health 6 hrs
The definition, scope and importance of social pharmacy and its place as a multidisciplinary field; the concepts of health and disease; and the determinants of health within the community.
Unit 2 · Health Systems, Policy and Pharmacoepidemiology 6 hrs
The structure of health systems and national health policy; the basics of epidemiology — endemic, epidemic and pandemic patterns, morbidity and mortality rates, and measures such as the odds ratio; and the principles of pharmacoepidemiology.
Unit 3 · Preventive Healthcare and Communicable Diseases 6 hrs
Immunization services, screening programmes and lifestyle counselling; health promotion and education, including the development of effective health-education materials; and the prevention and control of communicable diseases.
Unit 4 · Non-Communicable Diseases, Nutrition and National Programmes 6 hrs
Non-communicable diseases and their risk factors; nutrition and malnutrition, nutritional-deficiency disorders and food safety; mental health; and the national health programmes addressing them.
Unit 5 · Pharmacoeconomics and Professional Roles 6 hrs
The principles of pharmacoeconomics; the rational use of medicines; and the professional roles and responsibilities of the pharmacist within the community and the wider public-health system.
