Biotechnology in the pharmaceutical sciences; protein structure and function; enzymes and their pharmaceutical applications; and immobilization techniques and their industrial uses.
Unit 2 · Genetic Engineering and Recombinant DNA Technology 9 hrs
The principles of genetic engineering; recombinant DNA technology, vectors and cloning strategies; the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and its applications; and mutations and their types.
Unit 3 · Microbial Biotransformation and Fermentation Technology 9 hrs
Microbial biotransformation; the principles of fermentation and process control; fermenter design and operation; and the downstream processing and recovery of fermentation products.
Unit 4 · Blood Products, Gene Therapy and Personalized Medicine 9 hrs
Blood products — collection, processing and storage; gene therapy — types, methodologies, delivery systems and ethical considerations; and genomics, personalized medicine and the emerging role of artificial intelligence within it.
Unit 5 · Immunology, Vaccines and Sera 9 hrs
The immune system and the immune response; antigens and antibodies; hypersensitivity; vaccines and sera — their classification, production, standardization and storage; and monoclonal antibodies and their therapeutic applications.
