Unit 1 · Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectroscopy 10 hrs
The principles of ¹H-NMR and ¹³C-NMR; the solvents used and sample preparation; chemical shift, spin–spin coupling and integration; instrumentation; and the interpretation of spectra in the structural elucidation of pharmaceutical molecules.
Unit 2 · Mass Spectrometry 8 hrs
Principles, fragmentation and the rules governing it; ionization techniques including electron impact, chemical ionization, MALDI, FAB and atmospheric-pressure ionization; mass analysers and detectors; and applications in pharmaceutical analysis and structure determination.
Unit 3 · X-Ray Crystallography and Thermal Analysis 10 hrs
The origin of X-rays and the basic aspects of crystals; X-ray crystallography and diffraction methods and their pharmaceutical applications; and thermal methods of analysis — their introduction, instrumentation, the factors affecting measurement and their applications.
Unit 4 · Green Analytical Chemistry and Bioanalytical Methods 12 hrs
The types of green solvents and the computational tools used to assess the greenness of analytical methods; and an introduction to bioanalytical method development — the extraction of drugs from biological matrices, and method validation for bioanalysis.
Unit 5 · Bioequivalence Studies and Biosimilars 5 hrs
The bioavailability and bioequivalence study protocol and its regulatory requirements; and an introduction to biosimilars and the analytical comparability exercise used to establish them.
