B.Pharm First Year Syllabus
The Bachelor of Pharmacy (B.Pharm) is a four-year, eight-semester degree. PCI has mandated a revised NEP 2020-aligned syllabus for all approved institutions from the 2026-27 session. Alongside the classical pharmacy subjects, it introduces computing, data science and AI throughout the programme — Python, machine learning, data analytics and AI applications are now core courses.
Semester I — theory subjects
Basics of Python Programming for Pharmaceutical Sciences
NEP newPython fundamentals — data types, control structures, functions and libraries such as NumPy and Pandas; handling and visualising pharmaceutical and biological data; computational thinking for pharmacy applications.
General Pharmacy
Scope and history of the pharmacy profession; roles and responsibilities of a pharmacist; introduction to dosage forms, prescriptions and dispensing; pharmaceutical terminology and calculations.
Healthcare Psychology and Communication Skills
NEP newBasics of psychology in healthcare; patient behaviour and counselling; verbal and non-verbal communication; empathy, ethics and professional interaction with patients and healthcare teams.
Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology I
Structure and function of the human body — cell, tissues and the skeletal, muscular, nervous and cardiovascular systems; introduction to the pathophysiology of common disorders.
Introduction to Pharmacognosy
Definition, history and scope of pharmacognosy; classification of crude drugs; sources and cultivation of medicinal plants; introduction to primary and secondary plant metabolites.
Pharmaceutical Inorganic and Analytical Chemistry
Inorganic pharmaceuticals and their uses; limit tests; acids, bases and buffers; fundamentals of qualitative and quantitative (titrimetric) analysis.
Semester II — theory subjects
Applied Biostatistics and Data Analytics for Pharmaceutical Sciences
NEP newDescriptive and inferential statistics; probability distributions; hypothesis testing; correlation and regression; data-analytics workflows applied to pharmaceutical and clinical data.
Biochemistry
Structure and function of biomolecules — carbohydrates, lipids, proteins and nucleic acids; enzymes; bioenergetics and metabolism including glycolysis and the TCA cycle.
Human Anatomy, Physiology and Pathophysiology II
The respiratory, digestive, urinary, endocrine and reproductive systems and their functions; pathophysiology of related disorders.
Pharmaceutical Organic Chemistry
Structure, nomenclature, preparation and reactions of organic compounds; functional groups; stereochemistry and reaction mechanisms relevant to drug molecules.
Pharmacognosy and Phytochemistry
Chemistry, biosynthesis, isolation and analysis of secondary metabolites — alkaloids, glycosides, flavonoids, tannins, volatile oils and resins.
Physical Pharmaceutics
Physicochemical properties of drugs — solubility, states of matter, phase equilibria, surface and interfacial phenomena, rheology, and reaction kinetics and stability.
What's new in NEP 2020: the revised B.Pharm curriculum weaves computing and data science through the whole degree — Python programming, applied data analytics, machine learning and AI applications are now core subjects alongside the classical pharmaceutical sciences.
