Course contents — unit by unit · PCI NEP 2020 BP501T

Unit 1 · CNS Depressants — General Anaesthetics, Sedatives and Hypnotics 10 hrs

The development of CNS drug classes — chemical classification, structure, uses and the SAR of selected classes, with the synthesis of representative agents. General anaesthetics including halothane, methoxyflurane, enflurane, sevoflurane, isoflurane, desflurane, methohexital, thiamylal, thiopental and ketamine, together with newer agents such as remimazolam, fospropofol and dexmedetomidine; and the sedatives and hypnotics, including the barbiturates (phenobarbital, amobarbital, butabarbital, pentobarbital, secobarbital) and ramelteon.

Unit 2 · Psychopharmacological Agents 12 hrs

The chemistry, classification, SAR and synthesis of antipsychotic agents — the phenothiazines including promazine, chlorpromazine, triflupromazine and thioridazine — together with antidepressants, anxiolytics, anticonvulsants and antiparkinsonian agents, and their therapeutic applications.

Unit 3 · Antibacterial and Antitubercular Agents 8 hrs

The chemistry, classification and SAR of the fluoroquinolones including levofloxacin, and of the antitubercular agents bedaquiline, linezolid and delamanid, together with sulphonamides and other synthetic antibacterials.

Unit 4 · Beta-Lactams, Tetracyclines and Cephalosporins 6 hrs

The structure, classification and structure–activity relationships of the penicillins, tetracyclines and cephalosporins, together with their mechanisms of action, spectrum of activity and the basis of bacterial resistance.

Unit 5 · Antineoplastic and Immunosuppressant Agents 9 hrs

The chemistry, classification and SAR of the antineoplastic agents — including methotrexate, azathioprine, dactinomycin and daunorubicin — covering antimetabolites, alkylating agents, antibiotics and plant-derived agents, together with their mechanisms and toxicities.
